We serve George F. Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa for notarizations. The largest county facility, on Alta Road in Otay Mesa.

Notarizing inside a detention facility is not the same job as a normal signing. Access is controlled, the inmate's own photo ID is held with their property, and each facility runs its own procedure. We do these, and we help you follow the facility's procedure so you do not lose a day to a rule nobody mentioned.

Documents we are usually asked for

  • Powers of attorney, so someone outside can deal with a vehicle, a lease, a bank account or benefits
  • Vehicle titles and DMV transfers
  • Property deeds and sale documents
  • Child custody, guardianship and family law paperwork
  • Affidavits and declarations for court
  • Insurance claims, settlements and releases
  • Trusts and estate documents (a California will is witnessed, not notarized)

The identification problem, and how it is solved

This is the single most common reason a jail notarization fails. On booking, personal property including a driver's license or passport is taken and held, so the person you need to notarize usually has no acceptable ID on them.

There are two possible routes. An inmate identification card issued by the Sheriff's Department is accepted by California law as satisfactory evidence of identity. Where that is unavailable, California allows identification by two credible identifying witnesses who personally know the signer, have their own valid ID and have no interest in the document.

We confirm which route applies before we drive out, not after. Tell us the facility and the person's full legal name and booking number when you call, and we will tell you honestly whether the visit can work and what it needs.

How to arrange it

  1. Call us with the facility, the full legal name, the booking number and what needs signing.
  2. We confirm the access route with the facility and tell you what the realistic timeline is.
  3. Send us the document, complete, with no blanks for the signer to fill in. Email is simplest and we print it at $1 a page.
  4. We go in and notarize, then return the executed document to you or to the attorney who retained us.

Timing and cost

The facility's scheduling drives the timeline, not us, and we will give you a realistic estimate rather than an optimistic one. The notarization is the standard rate – $95 for the visit, including travel and up to three signatures – with any extended wait or exceptional circumstance quoted and agreed in advance. See the fee page.

Everything is handled discreetly. We discuss the signing only with you or the attorney who retained us.
